Since debuting just a few years back, the Uk’s Koan Sound have been producing some of the darkest, grimiest, but at the same time funky freshest dubstep out there today. They take the formula and say, who needs it? They’ll throw their basslines wherever they damn well please, and we here at Danceism absolutely love it. With destructive wobbles and demolition drum kicks they are starting off their US tour with Gemini on March 1st.

-

As you may or may not remember, for this particular interview we asked you guys for the questions, chose a few of our favorites, and asked them to Koan Sound. Now they’re written up below as Danceism’s first direct to fan interview! Check ‘em out, they may look familiar!

-

1. Do you plan on collaborating with other artists for tracks anytime soon?

We’re quite busy working on solo material for our next EP at the moment, but there are a couple of things in the pipeline. We’ve just finished a collaboration with Foreign Beggars which should be out in March at some point, and there’s definitely loads of other artists we’re hoping to have time to work with at some point this year (Culprate, Opiuo and Reso to name a few).

2. While you have a lot of bangers, your set at Dim Mak Studios in Los Angeles was really experimental. Will you be releasing some more mixes like that?

Our music selection when we DJ is generally pretty dancefloor-oriented, but we always aim to try and play original and experimental material. Often though our sets will vary depending on the gig, for example at smaller venues where we’re a supporting act we get a chance to test out new tunes, or if the sound system is really on point then we can draw for much more sub-bass heavy tunes that otherwise wouldn’t have the same effect.

3. KOAN sound, what usually goes on behind the scenes when you create a track? Any creative things you do to get you going?

Listening to a lot of music helps. More importantly listening to completely different genres than what you’re about to produce. You get endless ideas this way. A beer or a glass of wine always seems to get things going too.

4. Will you ever go back to the more darker styles of dubstep like your tracks Clowny and Blessed or have you got the Funk Fever?

Yep we’ll go back to those sounds at some point. We definitely have the Funk Fever but there are tons of other styles we’re experimenting with too.

5. Do you guys prefer sluts or virgins?

Sluts. Less time convincing, more time for producing

6. The UK has always been known for creating great Dubstep, how were you guys first introduced to the Dubstep scene? Which artists did you take most inspiration from?

Our first introduction to Dubstep was in around 2007 when the scene was still relatively small. We’d come across a Dubstep/Grime compilation CD and our local record shop was heavily involved in the scene at that time, so gradually we began to hear artists such as Skream, Jakes (from the HENCH crew) and Joker amongst others. At that time we were still listening to lots of Drum & Bass, and artists like Reso were very important in how we approached our music and our production ethos.

7. How do you feel about the way the US is embracing Dubstep recently? Where do you see the genre going in the future?

It’s hard to predict where the genre will be in 5 or 10 years time, but I think the current hype around the genre will begin to die down fairly soon, and hopefully different styles will begin to emerge and flourish.

8. You’re embarking upon a US tour with Gemini, what can we expect from your live sets this spring?

Lots of fresh music! We’re really enjoying playing out at the moment; it feels like we’ve found our niche in a way; we’re loving being able to play so many different styles and tempos of music, so we’re just looking forward to the opportunity to showcase our sound abroad.

9. What do you do after a show; any post-show rituals? Any post-show vices?

We find the greasiest food and munch down like there ain’t no tomorrow. Sometimes there’ll be after parties but generally we have early starts so we crash at the hotel. Rock n Roll.
