What’s going on with electronic music these days? It all seems so Trap focussed. EVERYONE is like OOOHHH this shit is HOTT.

Ever since, Mad Decent dropped Flosstradamus’s Total Recall trap has gotten all sorts of attention. Now trap has been around for a while, but it’s meteoritic rise to favor has been absurdly quick.
The new tunes coming out right now from Baauer, ︻╦╤─ ƱZ ─╤╦︻, to the more abstracted stuff by TNGHT is pretty amazing but it brings up a lot of concerns for your standard artist. With the advent of the music blog scene, and the constant almost addictive nature of finding the next hot tune, it leaves artists in this creative grey zone. Where they’re commiting to a genre in order to grow and if that genre flops, they’re risking losing their producer brand and falling to the “genre trap”. Can your name be tied so strongly to the genre, that you can’t leave it? Do your audience not like you to change your genre?
Take Dillon Francis for example (really cool guy btw), he’s one of the leading Moombahton producers with Diplo and Munchi, but now DJs are saying they have to “move on” from Moombahton, the crowd doesn’t dig it they say. With Trap on the rise the timing couldn’t be better for Dillon to drop an amazing Trap remix of his moombah beast “mastablasta.” Naming it “Rebirth” is interesting, is he hinting and moving in a more trap direction?
What do you think about everyone’s new found love for Trap? Will it surpass dubstep? Will artists lose their fans if they don’t adhere to the genre’s they’ve built themselves on?
