This topic came to mind after viewing this video of the big underground super electronic crew, HIFANA

Pretty amazing right? Now while it may seem counter-intuitive to play music with shoes it does beg the question. What can we not do?

With the creation of visual programming interfaces like MAXSP there is a strong growing movement of communities focused on exploring new ways of making music. Below are a few examples for you to explore. Got more? Drop me a line.

The Reactable

I think we all want one for our bedroom but this thing is a bit too expensive for the consumer market. I think every muscian was drooling when Bjork took this on tour with her.

The Octamasher

Me and this stuff have a history. Wandering through the pitch black playa at Burning man did I stumble upon this hidden gem. The creators were no where to be found but when I reached out to press the first button the tent came alive.

Monome

Yes the definative monone, as maxsp & midi seemed to blow up almost syncronisly (is that a word?) It made sense for innovators in the field to create all sorts of new ways of use. I think we can agree that Deadalus is largely responsible for leading this phenomenon.

Harmonic Keyboard

Calvin Harris – The Humanthesizer

Pretty self explanatory concept, he uses humans to reproduce one of his song, Ready for the Weekend.

If your thinking of making music in an online communal session you should check out Indaba, that’s pretty dope.
